Fun Family Reunions - But Without The Stress!

Posted on

With everyday life busier than ever, it can be difficult to set time aside for leisure time. While we normally see our immediate families often, with meal times and lazy weekends, family reunions can be put off and repeatedly delayed.

It can be difficult to arrange something for a large number of people, especially if they all have different interests and personalities. Organising a day that will provide enough distractions, but still allow people to mingle and socialise can be stressful. But here are a few fun and simple ideas for next time it is your turn to plan a day out:

Home-cooked meal

Inviting everyone round to yours for a simple home-made meal is a cost-effective and simple way of spending time together. Prepare for the meal in advance, and choose a recipe that most people will like. A beef casserole or stew is an ideal choice, as it can be prepared in the morning and left to cook throughout the day; leaving you with plenty of time to speak to people and enjoy yourself. Serve with crusty bread and wine, and allow people to help themselves. Casseroles can be cooked in one big pot, so you won’t have a lot of washing up to do, and they are easily adaptable for fussy families and anyone with special dietary requirements.

A beach day or visit a park

Getting some fresh air outside is the best way to have a relaxed and non-confrontational day together. If you’re having a big reunion, going for a hike and spending time at the beach is ideal as there will be plenty of things to keep everyone interested. Socialising is much easier when people are busy and joining in together, so take some games and activities such as rounders and cricket.

Family

Pack a picnic for lunchtime, and ask everyone to contribute something. This will make everyone feel involved, and you won’t have as much work to do! There are loads of great picnic ideas online, such as cheese straws and stuffed loaves. Pack bottles of water and cordial to keep everyone hydrated, and make sure you’ve all got change for an ice cream on the way back to the cars!

Visit a farm or attraction

If there are a lot of kids, you’re going to need something to keep them entertained. Organising for everyone to meet up at an attraction provides lots of space and an educational aspect. Children and adults alike will find something to enjoy, and they are normally reasonably accessible for both wheelchair users and pushchairs. Most attractions will have a cafe, so break up the day with a lunch or coffee break. For a more cost effective option take a picnic and blankets, as long as the weather behaves!

Go on a hike

If your family is reasonably active, organising a hike or country walk for the day. Stock up on snacks and drinks, and get everyone in their sensible walking boots. Take dogs along to keep the kids entertained, and plan games and challenges along the way. Walking will banish any awkward silences between family members who aren’t as close, and allow them to make new memories and experiences.

Family days out benefit everybody. They help you all to bond, relax, and have fun together - they’re essential to your well being! If you haven’t had a family day out for a while, then it could be time. If you need a real excuse, here are 6 signs you need a family day out:

You can’t remember the last time you all spent the day together

Picnic

When you have a family, bonding time is so important. Not time when you’re all sat together but you’re all on computers/phones/watching TV - real bonding time. If you can’t remember the last time you all spent the day together properly, you should definitely plan your next day out. Having a small budget isn’t really an excuse - there are a ton of things you can do with your family on a tight budget.

You’re feeling stressed

If you’re feeling stressed, it’s definitely time you got away from it all. Maybe you’re all feeling stressed. Work and school can be equally as stressful! To help alleviate stress, go and do something fun together. Simply spending time together can be an amazing way to feel better. It doesn’t matter what you do, but visiting one of the top amusement parks could help you to lower your stress levels further. Attending them gets you active and has you all screaming at the top of your lungs - a great stress buster!

You want to get out of the house

Do you feel like you all spend most of your time in the house? If you want to get out of the house, then think of something you can do as a family. You could go hiking, explore somewhere you’ve never been before, or go for a picnic. You have an endless amount of options that will get you in the sunlight and fresh air!

You want to be active as a family

Getting active as a family is a really healthy way to live. Going for walks together and enjoying nature is a fantastic way to spend your days. Make sure you take lots of pictures and take in the scenery as you go. Kids can learn a lot this way!

The kids have been well behaved

If the kids have been particularly well behaved, take them out for the day. You don’t always need to buy them something to show them you appreciate their behaviour. Quality time with you is enough the majority of the time!

You’re stuck in a rut

Perhaps you’re all bored of the same old routine. You go to work/school, come home, eat, and go to bed. If you do this for too long, it can begin to take its toll. Get out of that rut by enjoying a family day out together.

You have plenty of reasons here to enjoy a family day out. Make sure you schedule a time for family days out each month. Even if you can only do one special thing together each month, make sure you make the most of it!

Why Your Past Could Be So Important To Your Kids’ Future

Posted on

When I think about my kids, I’m always thinking about their future. I know that times are probably getting tougher, and they may have it harder than we have it now. I’m worried about providing for their education to make sure they have the very best chances in adult life. And I’m always wondering what kind of adults they may be.

I love my kids but, like most parents, I always have a few concerns about whether I give them too much. Nobody wants their kids to be lazy or to expect things to come to them in life. Instead, I hope my children understand the value and reward of hard work. I’m always talking about how things were in my Grandparents’ day, even if the kids may be a little too young to understand it right now.

Kids and Me

Things are certainly different today. I don’t want my kids to lose touch with their familial past so have begun thinking about what things I might pass onto them in the way of family heirlooms. I’ve been looking at jewellery and porcelain princess dolls as ideas for Heidi to inherit, and for Dex, watches and signed sports memorabilia. I probably have a handbag or a painting somewhere that has been passed down to me that might be suitable too.

When it comes to our family past, I don’t want to leave it too late to record the stories of long ago. I’ve been looking into some of the apps and websites that help you record the people in your family and have started building up the family tree (not without some difficulty). I’ve also been trying to access records like the census to track down family members from my mums side (she was adopted). It’s just another small something to pass onto the kids when they’re old enough to understand it.

In addition to this blog, I’ve also started to think about building up a scrapbook of events that happen to our family. I haven’t decided whether a paper book or an app would be best yet, but I’m determined to create something special. Each time something interesting happens, I’ll record it so my grandchildren and great grandchildren can inherit the details. It will help them get to know us and find out who we were long after we’re gone.

Heirlooms and historical records are quite important for families to look after. It connects you to your own family past as well as leaving something for your descendants to enjoy. It might take a little bit of work and research on your part, but your kids and grandkids will appreciate it. Perhaps you’ll discover a story about your grandparents you wouldn’t have had the benefit of beforehand.

Family stories are really important to hold onto. Your family scrapbook will help you collect your stories for future generations. Things about your job, your pets, your hobbies, and interests may seem boring to you. But these are the things that will fascinate your family in years to come. They help paint that picture of you were, and how you lived your life.

Stories, records and heirlooms help bring your life to life for someone in the future. It’s a great way to bring your present family together too. I can’t wait to start my own both with, and for, my babies.
