I’ll admit that we didn’t bother with a baby monitor for Dexter. As per the usual advice, he stayed in our bedroom with us for the first few months, then graduated to his own room when we felt confident he’d sleep through the night. We lived in a two bedroom flat with his nursery located neatly between our lounge and our master bedroom so we were always able to hear him cry (and trust me, he cried a lot).

We did have a Angelcare system, but the sleep pad bugged the hell out of me, and I was constantly unplugging the device as the lights kept waking me up. In any case, due to the layout of our home, it felt like overkill.

With Heidi however we’ve found a baby monitor invaluable. Now we’ve moved into a large three bedroom house, there’s more distance between us and her when she sleeps so we’re not always able to hear her easily. Add into the mix an over-excited toddler who seems a little confused as to whether he loves or hates his baby sister, I also can’t have the two children in the same room as one another or he’ll be apt to smother her in kisses… or her blanket.

The Tommee Tippee Digital Video Baby Monitor with Sensor Pad has therefore been a godsend.

This monitor is literally rammed with features:

  • Infrared night vision camera
  • Movement sensor pad
  • Adjustable sensitivity settings
  • 3” colour screen
  • Baby’s room temperature display
  • Up to 300m range with out-of-range indicator
  • Two-way talk back
  • Pager to find missing parent unit
  • Baby night light controllable from parent unit
  • Channel auto-select

The camera on this monitor is among the best I’ve used. The images on the screen are so clear, even in the pitch black (in daylight, the video is colour, switching to infrared when it gets dark). It’s also much simpler to position the camera unit to get a good angle of Heidi as you can tilt the camera up and down freely (with other systems, I’ve either had to pop the camera within the cot itself, on a bedside unit, or lower than the cot mattress). Given Heidi’s nursery is weeny with little furniture, Tommee Tippee’s camera is therefore ideal as it can live atop her windowsill.

Once the camera is aligned, and you’ve set the monitor up (see the above video) you simply press the ‘on’ switch on both units.

TIP: don’t turn the camera on with the parent unit in the same room, the feedback will wake baby.

You’ll be able to view baby as she peacefully sleeps from any other room in your home. There’s also an option to zoom in a little if you’re not 100% certain she’s awake and needs her mummy. If baby makes a noise (you control the sensitivity) the unit immediately springs to life and you’ll be able to hear her through the parent unit. If she’s having a right paddy and needs a little reassurance, there’s a two way talk-back option on the parent monitor that allows you to whisper that you’re on your way.

I’m also a big fan of the temperature indicator (there’s a display on both units). We previously used a Gro-egg for this but I’m not convinced on its accuracy. I’m terrible at gauging temperatures so find it reassuring to know that her room is comfortably ventilated.

Additionally there’s a nightlight function (low, medium and high settings) on the camera that negates any need for additional lighting in the nursery. This is ideal for Heidi who has only just moved into her big girl room away from mummy and daddy.

To be honest, we rarely bother with the sensor pad. Heidi is a real wriggler and does 360 rotations and covers every inch of her cotbed with baby drool every night. The detachable sensor pad has 3 settings (low, medium and high) and slots comfortably under baby’s mattress. You can opt to monitor baby soundlessly (a little light will flicker to reassure you baby is breathing) or choose to hear her. It will sound an alarm on the parents unit if no movement is detected from baby after 20 seconds. Although there’s little danger of this with my little gymnast, I can be a little forgetful at 2am, 3am and 4am (thanks Heidi) and have forgotten to turn the feature off a few times. This has woken up Craigy who was none too pleased.

I can see the benefit of the feature though. For anxious parents it adds another dimension of reassurance. Baby monitors have certainly come a long way since the days of old, and sensor pads are generally regarded as the ultimate in baby safety. Reading around the web to check out other parent’s opinions, they get 5 stars from parents whose children are asthmatic or have breathing difficulties. There are inevitably a few reported instances of it going off for no reason (or indeed, baby rolling off the pad), but I’m sure any parent would agree this is preferable to sleeping through when your baby is in trouble.

Finally, there’s rechargable batteries in both units. Whilst running on the mains, you’re also charging up the units, ready to be used mains-free later on. This makes it the perfect option for taking on trips and holidays where your plug sockets might be poorly located.

The Tommee Tippee Digital Video Monitor is available to buy from most major UK retailers at an RRP of £199.99. I appreciate this is a fairly significant investment for any cash-strapped parent, but it is competitively priced if you compare it with other brand’s best-in-range monitors (Angelcare’s AC1100 Video, Movement & Sound Monitor is £249.99). It’s certainly given me peace of mind, and you cannot put a price on that.

To find out more, or buy directly from Tommee Tippee, head over to TT’s website. Tommee Tippee will also be more than happy to answer any questions you might have over Twitter or Facebook. Of course, I’m also more than happy to discuss any aspect of the monitor with you if you leave a comment on this post.

Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser Review

Let’s face it, sterilising bottles is one of the biggest faffs you have to contend with as a new parent. With guidelines changing every five minutes, bottle-feeding mamas don’t seem to stand a chance of keeping up. As if it wasn’t stressful enough getting to know your new baby and trying to piece together a routine, feeding times involve a punishing ritual of washing up, sterilising, boiling water, and mixing feeds.

Even if you’re breastfeeding, there’s still a surprising amount of baby paraphernalia that will require the bacteria-zapping treatment (think dummies, breast pump parts, medicine spoons… the list is endless). Milton steriliser tabs are great short term solution for hospital stays or holidays, but for day-to-day sterilising you need the convenience of an electric steriliser or you’re likely to lose the will to live.

001 Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser Review

I’ve had dozens of electric sterilisers in my time but none come close to the Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser. I’m not just saying this because I’m a TT Mumb@ssador, I’m perfectly brave enough to call a spade a spade. I’m saying it because it’s absolutely true. And to prove it, I’m going against the grain and am going to share exactly why it kicks butt… against its two biggest rivals; The Philips Avent 3-in-1 Electric Steam Steriliser and Dr Brown’s Deluxe Electric Steriliser.

It’s HUGE

Not huge as in ‘takes over’ your kitchen, it’s actually far more slimline than the Dr Brown’s. No, by huge I mean you’re able to sterilise 6x chunky bottles (of virtually any brand) in one hit. Other sterilisers will claim to do the same thing, but as their own-brand bottles are smaller than Tommee Tippee’s, you might not be able to sterilise all your bottles if you have various makes.

Sterilising 6 bottles in one go is a godsend. You might be following the guidelines of your preferred formula to the letter, but your baby is bound to have other ideas. For example, Heidi is supposed to have 5x 180mls feeds per day, but she’ll often decline a bottle halfway through. This means she can make her way through 8x bottles easily in one 24 hour period. The more I can sterilise in one go, the better.

002 Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser Review

It’s SPEEDY

With the above in mind, you might be thinking you’d have to be incredibly disorganised to get caught short with no clean bottles. Well, I’m incredibly disorganised.

There is nothing worse in this life than being woken up by a hungry baby at 4am, making your way downstairs in the pitch black, changing a nappy with your finger in your little one’s mouth to stop the screaming, rushing into the kitchen to grab a bottle, and… there’s no clean bottles.

The Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser can sterilise 6 bottles in just 5 minutes (as a quick comparison, Dr Brown’s takes a whopping 12 minutes). So a quick dunk and scrub in the washing up bowl, a speedy rinse with cold water, then plopping them into the steriliser, and you could have the whole lot done in under 15 minutes. Trust me, this is important when your baby is hysterical in the dead of the night.

Bottles stay sterilised for 24 HOURS

No explanation needed on this one. I bet you a fiver you can’t make 6 bottles last a full day anyway.

Easy to use with no gimmicks

The Dr Brown’s sterilser is highly rated, but in my opinion, is a massive faff. You don’t need trays galore to sterilise bottles, you just need something that works.

003 Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser Review

The Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser couldn’t be simpler. Bottles go upside down, a tray goes on top, the lids and teats sit on the top shelf. Simple.

Fine, the Philips Avent props is intriguing as it’s adjustable in height and width, but I can’t see why this is so great. You have to face facts that when you have a baby, your steriliser is a tool of the trade. It should have pride of place in the kitchen and you will be using it regularly. Why would you bother reducing its size purely to sterilise soothers?

There are extras!

Included inside you get a Closer to Nature Easi-Vent 150ml Baby Bottle, a 0-3m Pure Soother, and some teat tongs. This means you’re ready to go the second you whip it out of the box.

Best of all… Price

Not just price, but value for money. Tommee Tippee just blows its competitor out of the water.

Philips Avent 3-in-1 Electric Steam Steriliser = £60.00

Dr Brown’s Deluxe Electric Steriliser = £52.20

Tommee Tippee Electric Steam Steriliser = £46.99 (…and the bottles are cheaper too!)

Need I say more…?

Heidi! (9 weeks)

My Mini Madam is now a whole 9 weeks old and I’m sooooo in love with her.

Whereas Dexter is definitely a daddy’s boy, Heidi is most definitely in love with her mummy. I’m not sure if this is because I breastfed her for the first 2 months, or if it’s because we’re so in tune with one another. If she cries, I know exactly what she needs and any tears are shortlived. In fact, she’s one of the happiest babies I’ve ever met.

Heidi will sleep through the night most nights. She’ll sometimes wake up for a cheeky 5am feed, but otherwise she’ll lay in until 9am. This is just as well as she doesn’t like to miss anything throughout the day. Her days are spent snuggling with me, staring at herself in the mirror on her playmat, or having her bum jiggled in her rocker. She’s still not 100% sure of her big brother yet and her eyes will widen as he approaches, but she won’t complain when he showers her with over-exuberant kisses.

She’s gone from a dinky 6lbs 9 to 10lbs. She’s a long baby with beautiful long legs (inherited from daddy) and is right on track in 0-3 month clothing. Now her little face is filling out, you can see how much she looks like daddy. She’s nothing like her big brother and the only thing they share are mummy’s blue eyes. Of course I’m bias, but I can’t stop pinching myself at how beautiful both my children are.

We’ve started tummy time and Heidi has taken to it well. She’s tried to hold her own head from birth so I think she quite likes the challenge of lifting her head from her mat.

Tummy time Heidi! (9 weeks)

I don’t think it will have escaped anyone’s notice that I’ve struggled parenting the two children. I’ve been left with panic attacks following the birth and am up most of the night working myself into a state. Just when I’m beginning to tire out or I feel a bit overwhelmed, Heidi will give me a smile and my heart melts. Her smile lights up her entire face and she looks so pretty.

Heidi Smiles Heidi! (9 weeks)

She also great at bath times and seems to find the water relaxing. She loves a good massage too and her skin is supremely soft as a result. I’ll be sharing some of the lotions and potions I’ve used on her skin over the next few weeks. At this age, it’s worth investing in their skin to ensure it stays soft and blemish free in the future.

Feeding-wise, Heidi’s on approximately 5x 180mls of formula. I gave up breastfeeding when I started being treated for post-natal depression as my medication seemed to make my milk dry out. She feeds incredibly well and any colic she experienced in her early days is subsiding. She’ll wind easily and is rarely sick.

Her next big milestones will be rolling over, and giggling. I simply can’t wait for these. I love you Heidi-bum xxx
