Maternity dresses that will transition perfectly for nursing

I’m still in many of my maternity outfits. Not because I’m grotesquely fat, or want to excuse the fact I’m still lugging around baby weight. Not because I’m still in waddle-mode and miss my bump either. It’s because I’m nursing Heidi and picked my maternity outfits well so they gave me the easiest possible access to my boobs, without looking like I’m wearing Dexter’s teepee.

Me, PREGNANT. (above)

You see, maternity brands have wised up to the fact that we’re spending more throughout our pregnancies to make ourselves still feel sexy and confident. But, being women, we’re savvy enough to realise that our investment will only last the 9 months. True, maternity outfits hold their value well and will fetch a handsome resale value on eBay, but taking hundreds of pictures of bump-banded linen trousers and uploading them is the last thing we feel like doing when we’ve been up all night nursing our babies. So transitional outfits are definitely your best bet; Maternity dresses that will transition perfectly for nursing.

No, this doesn’t mean you’ll be wearing tops with a baggy midriff, or dresses so unflattering you have people speculating whether you’re gunning for a world record for the world longest pregnancy. If you buy well, you can still wear many pregnancy outfit for years to come, even when you’ve finished whipping out your breasts on-demand.

Don’t feel that you have to buy from maternity ranges

If you pick stretchy material that holds it’s shape well, you can get away with a variety of outfits that aren’t maternity. This is particularly true of t-shirt and jersey dresses that seem to be all the rage this season. You can always accessorise with some maternity jeans or leggings if you’re not feeling body-confident. Maxi dresses are equally forgiving - try big prints to minimise your bump and distract the eye. Finally, pick dresses that are fitted under-the-bust but with free-flowing skirts to make a feature of your bump. Heine Maxi Dresses Maternity dresses that will transition perfectly for nursing

Spend a little more

Okay, you won’t want to hear this when you’re already remortgaging your house to buy nursery furniture, but you really do get what you pay for with maternity wear. I’m a little loathe to say it given I love charity shops and online auction sites for every day wear, but maternity wear that’ll last does cost a pretty penny. If you have an upcoming special occasion or you have a work wardrobe that is simply too tailored to accommodate a mini-you, sites like Isabella Oliver or Tiffany Rose do to-die-for maternity wear. Even better, there are many styles that will last you beyond your Bump Days.

For work wear, the trick is to avoid the tailored look as these will only work whilst you’re carting around baby. Instead pick wrap dresses and ruched styles that will still look fabulous on a smaller frame. These will also hide any legacy of baby if you decide to make the return to work before you’ve renewed your gym membership. Again, opt for materials with plenty of elastane and cross-over detailing at the neckline for easy access to your breasts for nursing / expressing.Isabella Oliver Dresses Maternity dresses that will transition perfectly for nursing

For occasion wear you can afford to go a little more fitted. Shift dresses specially designed for maternity like these lace numbers from Tiffany Rose still look amazing post-baby. The neck lines are also surprisingly stretchy to accommodate fluctuating breast size in pregnancy so will withstand a bit of artful tugging when nursing. I speak from experience here as I have one of my own.Tiffany Rose Dresses Maternity dresses that will transition perfectly for nursing

Buy nursing wear before your bump even appears

This is a trick I learnt inadvertently when I reviewed for Envie de Fraises. Many maternity stores will offer a nursing range alongside their maternity one. The truth is that most, if not all, of these clothes will accommodate a growing bump. This is because they’re designed to be worn immediately post-partum when you still have a sizable belly. All styles are therefore open to you and you can shop as though you never had a baby to consider in the first place! I love these ones from Seraphine which all come with integrated access to your breast for the most discreet feeding experience.Seraphine Maternity dresses that will transition perfectly for nursing

Mother’s Day with Vertbaudet

Posted on

Mother’s Day is fast becoming my favourite day ever. Given my relationship with my own mother has never really been up to much, it didn’t really have much significance for me before. Sadly, it would be a quick trip to Tesco to find a card, some ‘careful’ signing, and bunging it through her letterbox. Now I’m a mummy myself it’s taken on a whole new meaning. I honestly do believe my role as a mum is the most important, most self-fulfilling and most frustrating one to date. I can’t even remember what life was like without both children dominating my every waking thought - even though I haven’t met my littlest yet.

On Mother’s Day, Craig makes a fuss of me on behalf of Dexter and this year Bump will get in on the action too - who knows she may even surprise us and arrive early! I usually get a lovely card (complete with messy hand and foot prints), some flowers, and a restaurant lunch. I’ve also been casually dropping hints about a new makeup bag this year, so who knows…

To make make this year extra special, Vertbaudet have teamed up with Becky from Baby Budgeting to offer us blogging mummy’s a chance to win a lovely prize. The winner bags £50 worth of clothes for her little people, £50 worth of clothes for herself, and £100 worth of restaurant vouchers - bringing the total prize fund to a staggering £200! All you have to do is put together a blog post showing the perfect outfit for your little one to wear on Mother’s Day from Vertbaudet’s collection - easy!

Dexter already has tons of clothes from Vertbaudet. If you sign up to their newsletter you get deals and offers delivered to your inbox, and most are too good to pass up! Some of my favourite outfits of Dexter’s have come from here as they wash like a dream, hold their colours well and are bang on-trend for the little-man-about-town.

So without further ado, this year I think I’d plump for the following:

Boy’s Knitted Button-through Cardigan £9.75 / Baby Boy’s Checked Shirt £8.25 / Baby Boy’s Striped Cap £8 / Happy Price Baby Boy’s Denim Bermuda Shorts £9 / Boy’s Dual Fabric High Top Trainers £13.60

With all this great weather we’ve been having, it’s about time Dexter got his little leggies out. I thought these little jean shorts were cute and could take a few mud and tomato ketchup stains too. To keep the sun from his eyes, I’ve also plumped for a this really sweet cap which I can only hope he wouldn’t fling from his head the second his dad or I pop it on.

These shoes are also impossibly sweet and dinky and might give him a bit of extra stability as he waddles about. I like the fact the velcro is high enough around his ankles to stop him wrenching them off and throwing them from his pushchair.

For a splash of spring colour, I’ve also picked a checked shirt with orange and blue hues. I really struggled with deciding which top to go for as Dexter suits pretty much any colour. and there were some really lovely pastels in Vertbaudet’s collection this year. But I think this would look fab on him. To tone down the outfit, there’s also a handy muted grey cardigan for when the sun goes down.

But of course, I also have a newborn to think of! I have no idea if she’ll be here by the 30th March or not, but I have my fingers crossed. It would be unthinkable to leave her out, so here’s a little something I think would suit her:

Baby Printed Dress & Bloomers £17.25 / Baby Girl’s Hooded Wool Mix Coat (Light Warmth) £35 / Baby Girl’s jersey-lined Scarf & Hat £16 / Baby Girl’s Buttoned Cardigan £14

Despite all my earlier protestations, Mini Madam has lots of pink in her drawers. I’ve decided I don’t dislike it as much as I thought I did. The pink of this dress is almost cerise and the smock top and flower detail is so pretty. It’s also a really good length and will cover her bum and bloomers perfectly as she gets in lots of cuddle-action from our family and friends.

Because I doubt this gorgeous sunshine will stay around for long, I’ve picked a cute buttoned cardie too which looks really warm and snug (thanks to its jersey lining), and the cutest little wool mix coat cute I’ve ever seen! Something about this coat reminds me of Little Red Riding Hood and I can see it lasting her throughout April’s showers with a mini pair of wellies.

Finally, although I won’t be popping a scarf on her until she’s a little older, I love the appliqué flower detail on this little hat!

Then there’s me. Luckily Vertbaudet have some gorgeous and practical maternity and nursing styles for me to choose from too.

Maternity Skirt with Belt £35 / Softly Draping Pleated Maternity Vest Top £19 / Tights in Openwork £11

I love the shape and fit of this skirt. I’ve lived in over-the-bump bottoms throughout this pregnancy and find them so comfy I doubt I’ll be in a hurry to get back into my pre-pregnancy wardrobe. The colour reminds me a little of a safari outfit and the pockets are really practical for a busy mummy.

To cover my legs until the baby weight magically disappears (Ha!), I’d wear these warm over-the-bump tights too. The vertical stripes will hopefully slim them down and I’d add riding boots to detract from my swollen ankles. Adding this grey marl drape top should pull all the attention to my super-sized boobs instead. I love the cut of this - perfect for breastfeeding and covers all the bits you’re not feeling too confident with after you’ve had a baby.

So that’s it! My perfect Mother’s Day outfits for me and my beautiful children. Now to raid Craigy’s wardrobe and get him looking good enough to be seen with us!

If you’d like to celebrate Mother’s Day with Vertbaudet and be in with a chance of winning this yourself - you’ll have to be quick. Closing date for entries is tomorrow! Good luck everyone xx

Envie de fraises Envie de Fraises Review Maternity Style (Without the Designer Price Tag)

One for fellow mums-to-be everywhere - I was recently given the opportunity to try out French maternity brand Envie de Fraises as they bring their label to the UK. I am so eternally grateful these guys approached me or I’d still be forking out a few hundred a month on clothes to drape over my swollen bump. When they first contacted me, they pitched the brand to me as follows

“We want to help expectant mums look and feel good during and after pregnancy without spending a fortune on maternity clothes”

There’s definitely something to said for this. There are so many costs involved in having a baby - from nursery furniture, to travel systems, to car seats, to bedding…. it quickly mounts up and before you know it you’ve put a fortune on the credit cards. When I first feel pregnant for the second time I laid down a bit of a challenge on Twitter to find the best value maternity brand and I’ve put dozens of online boutiques through their paces.

Well, Envie de Fraises sent me a very generous bundle of maternity clothes to try, and tellingly they’ve been the ONLY maternity clothes I’ve worn for the last few weeks. They are so supremely comfortable, impressively made and flattering, When you’re really struggling with even the most basic of daily tasks, and even sitting upright for long stretches leaves you screaming in agony, you want something that makes you feel good, but doesn’t need hoisting up over your boobs every five minutes. I can safely say that everything they’ve sent me fits the bill.

maternity and nursing dress with wrap over neckline Envie de Fraises Review Maternity Style (Without the Designer Price Tag)

First up, I received a maternity and nursing dress with wrap-over neckline. This is fabulously comfortable. The fabric stretches over my not insignificant bump with ease, and there’s plenty of ‘wrap’ material across the breast section to prevent over-exposure. The wrap style frontage ends just under your boobs which nips you in before your bump begins. This gives a flattering silhouette and draws attention to your bump without ramming it in people’s faces. The dress also ends just above the knee which is fabulous if you feeling conscious about any water retention or swelling in your calf’s or ankles.

Best of all, it’s a tiny £45.99. For similar dresses from Isabella Oliver or even Tiffany Rose, you’d paying double. I’m not saying these rival boutiques shouldn’t feature in your maternity wardrobe - for occasion wear, I still love my Tiffany Rose dress, but for day-today comfort and work wear, I’d rather be in this little number.

maternity top with blouson sleeves2 Envie de Fraises Review Maternity Style (Without the Designer Price Tag)

I also received a maternity top with blouson sleeves in a very similar style. It features the same generously proportioned wrap over neckline, with an integrated material belt to cinch you in under the breast. This belt is huge - you wrap it under yourself several times to perfect the look (which is a little fiddly but an easy job for the man in your life). As I’ve always been shy about my cleavage, I choose to wear this with a little vest top underneath but you can see from the model shot that this isn’t strictly necessarily..

The blouson sleeves help give this top added interest and help detract some of the attention away from your belly. The colour is also lovely and looks fabulous with a pair of maternity leggings and heels or jeans and cowboy boots.

For £40.24 it’s a long-lasting, versatile and stylish top that will last you the duration of your pregnancy (and beyond) for a tiny price tag. This has become my most worn maternity top and I can testify it washes beautifully.

nursing maternity set 3 essentials Envie de Fraises Review Maternity Style (Without the Designer Price Tag)

For hanging around the house, the Nursing and Maternity Set (nursing vest, yoga pants with over-the-belly band, and waterfall cardigan) is ridiculously great value at £57.49. It means you’re paying out less than £20 per item which is unbeatable as far as I’m concerned.

The yoga pants are lovely and loose with (again) a very generous over-the-bump band. The material is really breathable too which makes them ideal for a variety of activities - from lounging, to sleeping, to yoga. I’m planning on wearing mine in the hospital after I’ve given birth (c-section or no c-section - I know they won’t irritate my tummy).

The vest looks really attractive and features a cross over breast section for nursing post-birth. This does come up a little small on me but then I have 36GG boobs to contend with. I feel more comfy with a little vest top underneath but for smaller breasted women I can’t see why you’d need to. The tummy panel is nice and long so fits over your belly with ease.

The ensemble is topped off with a cute cardigan which I’ve virtually lived in everyday since it arrived. Swathes of fabric to the front mean you can wrap it over bump to keep it nice and warm. The whole set is available in tons of different colourways too so well worth investing in a few of these.

Yoga Envie de Fraises Envie de Fraises Review Maternity Style (Without the Designer Price Tag)As you might expect, the jackets and coats are more expensive, but not over the top. My belted maternity trench with front pockets is comfy and easy to wear, and still incredible value at £91.99. There’s no fussy buttons to worry about here - you simply wrap the jacket around yourself and secure using the huge belt provided. The sheer length of this belt means you can opt for a bow rather than a knot if you prefer.

The pockets are lovely and deep which is fabulous for short journeys as it means you can ditch your heavy handbag, and the material is really snuggly and warm so ideal for this terrible weather we’ve been experiencing. My only tiny niggle is that I wore this coat to town the other day and was continually getting electric shocks in HMV when I came into contact with metal!

So there you have it. I can honestly say I love every item and I can’t recommend highly enough to other mums-to-be - both for value and quality. It’s not often you come across a website where you would literally wear every item - but I think this is one of those rarities. With really pretty nightdresses and lingerie also available, it’s your one-stop shop to deck out your maternity and nursing wardrobe. The site offers free delivery and returns so you can order a couple of sizes and try on at home. You can find the full clothing range online at www.enviedefraises.co.uk or check them out on Twitter, FB or Pinterest if you’d like to know more.

I was sent these clothes free of charge for review purposes but all views and opinions are my own.
