Going Girly… Cath Kidston

Looking around our home I’ve noticed that Craig seems to be winning in the his / hers stakes and there’s a distinct lack of girliness. Although we tend to agree on the ‘big bits’ (furniture, pictures, and carpets) - when it comes to accessories, we’ve been lazy.

When Craig and I met and decided to start a home together (in the space of about 3 short weeks!) - both of us had our own places and we went through the age-old ritual of sorting though each others bits… no pun intended. We did the usual “I’m not so keen on that”, “That’s okay…” thing - we were in that funny polite (and short-lived) phase before you delight in saying feel you can say exactly how much you hate each others choice of duvet cover.

The result? We’re left with a real mixture of knickknacks and accessories that neither of us are attached to, but we can’t bring ourselves to throw away. Everything feels very bland, colourless and boring. I seem to have fed all my creativity into Dexter’s room, and none into rooms that Craig and I spend most of our time in.

Cue Cath Kidston. I’m determined to have a slice of her in every room.

I’m a massive fan of her prints. They’re so distinctly pretty and instantly recognisable. Her name has become synonymous with all things country, shabby chic, and most importantly, British. Slipping little pockets of it throughout the home has an instant uplifting effect and screams of nostalgic chintz. Whether it reminds you of Grandma’s house, the cool girls from school (you know - the ones that have gone on to work as fashion buyers for Topshop), or walks in the country - you instantly feel proud of our heritage and transported back to your childhood.

3 LITTLE KNOWN FACTS:

  1. Cath Kidston is Kirstie Allsopp’s cousin
  2. Cath has an adorable Lakeland Terrier called Stanley who features in many of her prints
  3. She once described her London’s Holland Park shop as provoking a Marmite Reaction - “People either love it and want a little bit of it very much, or want to stab us.”

Well as a fan of the brown stuff, I can safely say I’m in the ‘Love it’ camp and once walked into a metal bin whilst admiring the shop front in my hometown, Reading.

Here are some of my favourites bits:

Just the thing for cosy nights in - Dexter and I could wear cute Mummy-and-me matching prints! This Tiny Cowboy Sleepsuit is adorable, and it might shock you to learn that I have been known to rock the odd pair of pyjamas (when I’m not slinking about in Agent Provocateur undies of course (*cough… never)).

And when it’s time for us to bed down and dream of winning the lottery, Dexter could slip into his Dinosaur bedding and I could snuggle up with Craig under an Antique Rose Eiderdown - this looks so cosy and warm and would inject a bit of much-needed colour into our whiter-than-white bedroom.

I need a new change bag for Dexter and have fallen head over heels for this Spot Saddle Bag - with some cute little pockets for keys and my mobile, all my baby baggage could be stowed inside this gorgeous little number. It’s also manly enough for Craig for when he and Dex head out alone to do boy-things.

With a contrasting wooden handle umbrella, it would inject some life into my outmoded wardrobe - I might even pass as ‘cool’ again. I’m pretty sure my trench-coat is circa 1970 so would match this perfectly.

For the living room, a simple splash of Antique Rose on our sofa cushions and I’d get the girliness I’ve been craving. Whilst snuggling with Craig on the sofa in front of the fire, I could also make a patchwork quilt for the new baby from these Cotton Patchwork Squares (it can’t be that hard… right?). A year on in, I might even have something beautiful like this to tuck a little madam up in.

I just love how beautiful fabrics inspire crafty-folk and there’s some amazing creations on Pinterest by people turning otherwise dull objects into charming Kidston-inspired Decoupage / Handsewn Objets D’Art - like lampshades and iPad coverlets. The nice thing about Cath Kidston in particular is that she actively encourages it.

I’ve even stumbled across some Cath Kidston inspired nail-art that just goes to show how far this iconic woman has pervaded everyday culture.

But, if you’re like me and haven’t seen a sewing machine since your mum sewed on your Girl Guide badges, there’s always online stores like Amara to pick up something beautiful - many of their lines aren’t available through the Cath Kidston site at the moment and there’s plenty of other aspirational brands to tempt you too (such as Missoni Home, Roberto Cavalli, and Pip Studio).

I’ve also put togther a Pinterest Cath Kidston (Wishlist) Board with some other gorgeous bits I’m lusting after, and some of those handmade treasures I mentioned earlier.

This is my entry to win £200 worth of Cath Kidston products from Amara, the luxury online boutique.

Could Pinterest inspire me to get crafty..?

Posted on

I am the least crafty person on the planet. I challenge anyone to beat me to that honour.

But this doesn’t stop me admiring some of the crafty pins on Pinterest, and feeling a glimmer of hope. Some of them look so do-able, and are such simple ideas that I just have to try them out. So I’m setting myself a challenge. Every month, I will make one of the following things for Dexter’s nursery (given I’m hoping I’ll be pregnant again this year, I will also be making things in preparation for his / hers arrival too).

Here are some of the things I have planned for this year.

This rag rug is so pretty. In this example on Craftaholics Anonymous by Emily and Jaime at Everyday Art, pinks and purples are used, but I’d make it with various shades of blue for Dexter’s room (if I can bear to rip up some of his old baby clothes). Dexter currently has a super soft white one that can be safely stowed away in preparation for baby 2 as it’s perfect for delicate newborn skin.

I also love this coat rack idea by Alexis Fine. It’s so pretty. Although Dexter’s coats are folded up in his drawers (owing to my coat hanger phobia) all his hooded towels are currently draped over his door. As I’m so short, I have to literally jump to hang them up - mission impossible when I’m holding Dex. I’d have to try to affix the wood to an over-the-door hanger (like the one below) or simply thread the wood through the metal.

Next up is this cute button monogram plaque. This particular one is almost £50 on etsy.com. No disrespect to the seller, but I reckon I can manage this on my own. It’ll be another gorgeous statement piece for his room. I guessing you just wrap some pretty wallpaper or fabric around a wooden frame, then glue or sew on the buttons. The hardest thing will be replicating this font but there are some amazing ones to download on the web that I could use as a template.

Come May, I’ll also need to re-do Dexter’s handprints. We’re planning on doing them every 6 months so we can see how see much he’s grown. We used a kit from Mothercare last time, and although this looks lovely, I quite fancy taking it up-a-notch next time. I love this idea (and the re-worked version by Shades of Grey) and it seems perfectly achievable (even for me).

I’m also keen to make baby 2 a mobile myself. Dexter has a mamas and papas one that has serves us well - but it doesn’t match his room and bedding. I also hate the plastic that affixes it to the cot as it’s awkward when you’re trying to lift him in and out. If done right, the ceiling-to-crib ones have so much more impact.

These are my favourites and I’d like to include elements of each of them to make something really special. I’m loving the upcycled bicycle wheel and the cartoon print from the example below but would also incorporate glow in the dark shapes (as per example 2) to add extra interest for my restless newborn. I personally think mobiles should be crammed full of different textures and colours so baby has plenty to look at. Although these ones won’t rotate or play music, there’s plenty to hold my little one’s attention.

I really love this little birdy one too. The birds themselves are easy to make and really effective - especially with the little button and ties. Substituting the wooden beads below for little jewels and small mirror fragments would look make it extra sparkly.

Finally - I also plan on making a memory board for Dex that we can pin photos and some of his newborn clothing to. Again, this is so simple. I’d just need to source a unique and pretty frame from an antique shop, cut a fabric pinboard to size, then add strips of elastic (optional).

Wish me luck - I’ll share how I get on.

Some of my 2013 MAD Blog Awards Nominations

Posted on

1234

I’m reliably informed the MAD Blog Awards (or The MADs as they’re more affectionately known) are the equivalent to the BAFTA’s for family-life bloggers. I was blogging when the 2012 awards were in full swing, but completely missed the hype not having a twitter account. Now I can’t move for hearing about them - it seems everyone is voting, discussing their nominations, appealing for votes, or agonising over them.

I thought I’d share some of my nom’s with you so you can discover some of the most innovative, charming and witty blogs penned by other mummy bloggers. Unfortunately we could only vote for one blog per category and there are so many others that deserve a mention but here are a few of my personal favourites:

Best Blog Writer: Mammy Woo

This is one blog that doesn’t need updating everyday, because every post that is made, is comedy gold. It’s also incredibly heart-warming and endearing - Lexy is frank about her PND and various other emotions, and writes about them in a way that is so explicitly raw and personal that you can’t help but be moved. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes sad, she has a style all of her own.

The blog is all about her life with her “2-year-old boxer and screamer extraordinaire” Addison. There’s no doubting that she loves her little man - but she’s often making us giggle with her accounts of being beaten up and ridiculed by him, or injuring herself on his playthings (or walking into a glass door) - it’s the perfect portrait of a long-suffering mammy who is loving every second of it. I won’t be the only person to nominate her and I’ve got my fingers crossed she wins this one.

Best Pregnancy Blog - Mummy Adventure

I’m a massive fan of Bex’s weekly On the Inside, On the Outside posts about her pregnancy, her pregnancy-style posts, and her musings on welcoming baby 2 (Squish) into her mini family. I first stumbled across her blog when she announced her second pregnancy to her son Dylan with a cardboard box filled with blue balloons and just fell in love with it.

It takes a master blogger to come across as approachable, calm and friendly through the medium of writing. It sometimes prickles me when I detect a hint of self-importance in bloggers and there simply is none here. There’s no denying she has a pregnant-body-to-die-for yet somehow I’m not jealous at all… (ask me that again when I’m expecting number 2 and swollen with fluid retention and my butt warrants a wide load sign…).

Most Innovative Blog - The Ramblings of a Formerly Rock’n'Roll Mum

Miss Cisco is always making me giggle. Not having the foresight to check with her how long she’s been at it, I didn’t nominate her for Best New Blog (and am kicking myself about it). That’s why she finds herself getting the weird nomination for Innovativeness. But for me, that is kinda what her blog is all about; It’s a real mash-up of funny laugh-out-loud, and mad little observations that scream eccentricity.

You get the feeling she’s all about having fun - a pint rather than a wine drinker. I’m tempted to stalk her at a blogger event just to satisfy my curiosity. Sleep with one eye open Miss Cisco…

(Coincidentally - if you like what you see over there - you’ll probably like Random Ranting of a Tattooed Mummy too - see’s hosting the Alternative Blog Awards which is well worth checking out)

Most Entertaining Blog - Single Slummy Mummy

It’s no secret that I love Jo. Hers is blog packed with observational comedy. She’ll read a ridiculous local newstory or spot a ridiculous shop name and an epic blog post is born. It’s the blog I feel compelled to comment on the most and one you can dive in and out of when your OH is watching the football and the laptop is your only friend.

Stand-out posts for me this year have been The one where I lose Belle in a wood (every mother’s nightmare) and her thoughts on Amsterdam’s Red Light District.

Best Photography - Capture By Lucy

I love Lucy. There I said it - and I’m not alone. This is the most visually beautiful blog I’ve ever seen. Her posts on charity shop hauls, craft ideas, and vintage fairs are full of stunning photographs that make you feel as if you’re there. You feel cooler somehow every time you visit her site.

I can’t even put my finger on what makes this blog so special. It just appeals to so many people - the vintage-lover, the geeks, and the style-unconscious (erm that would be me) and she’s also incredibly sweet and down-to-earth. She blogs for the beauty of it, and the result is a wonderful scrap-book un-polluted by sponsored posts and reviews (not that I’m criticising this - hers is just a different kind of blog - one to aspire to maybe).

get-attachment.aspx

So there you have it - of course I voted for some others and will write about them some other time as I can hear a little guy upstairs awaking from his nap.

Now I’ve only just tamed my beast-blog and I think it’s true to say that most of us relative newbies can take a few months (in my case 18 months) to figure out what the hell we’re doing. I think I’ve finally shaken the off the new baby hangover, and am beginning to find my feet. Other than Best Baby blog (which I can’t possibly lay claim to) none of the other categories apply to me so my lonely little Facebook plea will be my only one. Looking through all the blogs in my google reader - there are so many more worthy.

I’ll only give you the link to the nomination form and plead for you all to get involved. You don’t need to be a blogger yourself - simply human-shaped with an email address. Neither do you have to vote in every category - if there’s just one post you’ve read this year that intrigued you, made you smile, or you felt an affinity to - let that blogger know about it and vote (you never know, he or she might get a nice night out, a glass of something fizzy, and a shiny new award because of you).

A vintage-looking Dexter

Posted on

I’m not very good at linking up to other mummy blogs which is pure laziness on my part. That said, there are some really inspirational linkies that crop up from time to time; things I feel passionately about, and things I feel won’t dilute the blog, rather add to it. There are also some lovely competitions I sooo want to win as the prizes would be fabulous for Dexter (and me!).

I stumbled across such a blog earlier on today and haven’t been able to get it out of my head. Kitsunetsuki is a really visual blog by Laura Fox Gill about food, art, photography and books - it’s a real feast for the eyes as the pictures are out of this world. She is running her first ever competition and its a really exciting one. It’s to win a Polaroid camera.

The truth is, I’ve ALWAYS wanted a Polaroid, ever since I was a little girl. I love the thought of getting instant photos and the not-knowing if your shot is any good or not - It makes the good photos just that little bit more special. I have a beautiful Canon 1100D and I absolutely love it - but in all honesty, even my starter DSLR Canon makes photography so simple that even the least accomplished photographer can achieve some really stunning pics. A Polaroid is not for the faint hearted, you can waste whole reams of film trying to get something amazing, and the film is not cheap - but oh my God they’re beautiful. They’re kitsch, they’re 80′s retro and I really want one.

As part of the competition, you have use a photo effect application to add a vintage effect to a photo you have taken. I have never experimented with one before so was pleased to see how simple they are to use. I used Pixlr but I’ve heard equally great feedback about Instagram so will be having a play with this over the next few weeks to see how they compare. The effects are so clever and I simply love these enhanced photographs of Dexter. I’m not sure if I’ve achieved vintage but I love these all the same and they’re timeless to me.

Competition now closed
